Supervised visitation

We know navigating custody arrangements can bring up a lot of emotions, so we want to keep things clear and supportive. Supervised visitation simply means that time between a non-custodial parent and their child takes place with a neutral, trained third party present, whose focus is on keeping everyone safe and cared for — helping children maintain a meaningful relationship with both parents without asking them to carry the weight of adult conflict.

There are many different reasons a judge might order supervised visitation, and it’s important to know that this decision isn’t about placing blame — it’s about creating a safe, supportive path forward for everyone involved, especially the child.

Some common reasons include:

  • Giving a parent the opportunity to work through certain challenges in a supported setting.
  • Helping rebuild the connection between a parent and child after time apart.
  • Gently introducing a parent and child who haven’t yet had the chance to build a relationship.
  • Providing extra care and oversight where there’s a history or concern involving domestic violence, abuse, neglect, or substance use.
  • Addressing questions related to parenting approaches or mental health.
  • Reducing the risk of a child being taken by a family member without consent.

Whatever the reason, our goal is always the same: to help protect the wellbeing of the child while supporting the relationship between parent and child in a safe, healthy way.

Depending on the specific safety and protection concerns involved, a judge may decide that a child can spend time with a parent only when a neutral third person is present to oversee the visit. This kind of arrangement — often called “supervised visitation” — is designed to create a safe, supportive space where the relationship between parent and child can continue, while still prioritizing everyone’s wellbeing.

First, we want to acknowledge how much courage it takes to navigate this situation, and we’re sorry for what you and your children have been through. Please know that your safety, and the safety of your boys, matters deeply — both to us and to the court.

When there’s a history of domestic violence, judges are required to take that seriously when making custody decisions. If the court finds that abuse has occurred, they can put strong protections in place within the custody order to help prevent further harm.

Often, this means visits between the parent with a history of abuse and the child will be supervised, so a trained professional or an approved third party is present the entire time. The goal is simple: making sure your children are never left alone with a parent who has caused harm.

In some situations, a judge may also choose to introduce visits gradually, allowing trust to be rebuilt slowly and only once there’s confidence that your children are truly safe.

You’re not alone in this process, and we’re here to help support you and your family every step of the way.

Judges weigh any history of domestic violence and impose strict custody provisions. Supervised visits at our center — or third-party monitoring — ensure children remain safe from an abusive parent.

Every family’s situation is different, and how costs are handled often reflects that. Typically, a judge will make this decision based on each parent’s financial circumstances, along with details provided by their attorneys.

In many cases, the parent whose visits are being supervised covers the cost, though it’s also common for both parents to share the expense. In some situations, family members or friends may help cover the fee as well.

Whatever the arrangement, our goal is to keep the process as clear and supportive as possible for your family.

When a child has been placed in foster care through the court or a child welfare agency, and the goal is working toward reunification, therapeutic supervised visitation offers a supportive space for birth parents or guardians to spend time with their child. During these visits, a mental health professional is present — not just to supervise, but to actively help the family navigate difficult dynamics, work through conflict, and build healthier ways of communicating.

Our hope is to give families the tools and support they need to move forward in a safer, more constructive way, reducing the risk of further conflict and helping everyone move closer to a positive path forward together.

Safe Exchange, sometimes called “Supervised Exchange,” offers a smoother, more peaceful way for children to transition between parents. We take care to ensure that there’s no direct contact between the parents (or other individuals involved) during the handoff, so children can move between homes without being exposed to tension or conflict.

Our aim is simple: to make this moment feel as calm and stress-free as possible, for parents and children alike.
